چکیده
UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Spartina alterniflora is one of the nine most notoriously invasive plants in China. Microsatellite markers were developed for this species to investigate its invasiveness and genetic diversity. • METHODS AND RESULTS Fifteen polymorphic and seven monomorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers derived from expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were identified and screened in 60 samples of S. alterniflora. The number of alleles per polymorphic locus ranged from two to eight, with an average of 3.8 alleles per polymorphic locus. The expected heterozygosity and observed heterozygosity based on seven disomic loci ranged from 0.27 to 0.46 and 0.21 to 0.51, respectively. The average Shannon index ranged from 0.26 to 0.94 in eight nondisomic loci. • CONCLUSIONS The SSR markers described here may be useful for further investigation of population genetics and invasion dynamics of S. alterniflora.

Evolution of a new ecotype of Spartina alterniflora (Poaceae) in San Francisco Bay, California, USA.
We report the discovery and spread of a dwarf ecotype of Spartina alterniflora in San Francisco Bay. Relative to typical S. alterniflora, this dwarf ecotype has one-fifth the tiller height (∼21 cm), tenfold the tiller density (∼4000 tillers/m(2)), and is restricted to growth in the upper intertidal zone. Chromosome counts of the dwarfs are identical to typical smooth cordgrass (2n = 62), and sm...
متن کاملGenetic Diversity and Spatial Structure of Spartina alterniflora at Four Spatial Scales
Spartina alterniflora, salt marsh cordgrass, is the dominant plant in coastal wetlands along the North American Atlantic coast. Ecological disturbances in salt marshes, such as coverage by wrack, disease, and eat-outs, affects Spartina marshes from the Gulf of Mexico to New England and may reduce the diversity of S. alterniflora clones within a population or alter other genetic characteristics ...
متن کاملNitrogen uptake by the shoots of smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora
The smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora is the foundation species in intertidal salt marshes of the North American Atlantic coast. Depending on its elevation within the marsh, S. alterniflora may be submerged for several hours per day. Previous ecosystem-level studies have demonstrated that S. alterniflora marshes are a net sink for nitrogen (N), and that removal of N from flooding tidal wat...
متن کاملPhysical Stress, Not Biotic Interactions, Preclude an Invasive Grass from Establishing in Forb-Dominated Salt Marshes
BACKGROUND Biological invasions have become the focus of considerable concern and ecological research, yet the relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors in controlling the invasibility of habitats to exotic species is not well understood. Spartina species are highly invasive plants in coastal wetlands; however, studies on the factors that control the success or failure of Spartina invas...
متن کاملMolecular phylogeny of hybridizing species from the genus Spartina Schreb. (Poaceae).
Interspecific hybridization events have been reported in the genus Spartina Schreb. (Poaceae), involving the east American species Spartina alterniflora, and including either introgression (e.g., with the western American Spartina foliosa) or allopolyploid speciation (e.g., with the Euro-African Spartina maritima). Molecular phylogenetic analysis of the genus has been undertaken in order to und...
